Artist of the Week: Patrick Welham

When did you first become interested in art?

I’ve always been interested even from an early age! Ask any parent/uncle/aunt and they always recount me drawing at all times.

How would you describe your design style?

My work has been described as paper-cut/cut-out style, but not specifically for children or adults.
What inspires you?
The sea inspires me; as I live in Cornwall, you’re never too far from a beach!
What is your favourite piece in your collection?
‘London’ is my favourite, as I think I managed to capture the spirit of the place, without slipping into trap of drawing what people expect.
Is there any artistic talent in your family?
My late grandfather painted, other than him I think I just took to it!
What is the journey you take to produce your work?
It always starts with a simple sketch, and then quickly onto the final digital image. I have editorial clients who have quite tight deadlines and who need to see something quickly!
What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?
I liked the idea of being part of something that celebrated British design and illustration, and thought it might be nice for some of my followers to be able to buy prints of my creations.
When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy sailing and listening to music, but to be honest most of my time is spent invoicing, completing commissions and talking to art directors.
Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?
I self-promote everyday in some form or other, and it is hard to get noticed in a sea of talent; but if you persevere, most of the time it pays off.
Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?
Mainly Penzance and St Ives, other parts of Cornwall and London. If I’m not working I’ll be on a beach somewhere!
What makes British talent different than elsewhere?
I think we have a shared eccentricity unique among designers/illustrators that results in quirky and memorable pieces! We are also a small country, which encourages collectives and collaborations.
What are your plans for 2014?
I’ve just signed a deal with Snyder in New York who now represent me as an illustrator in the US. As for the UK, I plan to keep illustrating and making artwork to sell!
Many thanks for the support!
