Artist of the Week: Ilka Dickens

When did you first become interested in art?

I think it was in secondary school back in Australia. I studied art from my first year and have never looked back.

How would you describe your design style?

Typographic, bold and friendly.

What inspires you?

I’m surrounded by cool design in the East End of London. Just walking the streets inspires me. Also my children are a constant inspiration.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

Can I have 2? My Love you to the moon and back design. I say this to my children all the time so it’s close to my heart. And my Tired of London Tired of Life design. I will never be tired of London!

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

My Mother always made our clothes. I have 3 sisters and my mother made us some very funky clothes in the 70s.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I produce all of my work digitally. If it’s a typographic print I spend most of my time choosing fonts that work together. I then take an age on layout and then colour selection.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

I love seeing my designs on something other than greeting cards and prints. I love the cushion covers and have to stop myself from buying them all for my home.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Going to galleries around London, sipping coffee in cafes, hanging out in Victoria Park with my family. I also love traveling.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

Luckily not. So far most of the retailers I sell to have discovered me online or at a market.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

I spend far too much time at the Pavilion cafe in Victoria park, which is just around the corner from my home. I even designed a Victoria Park print in homage.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

I think Brits have a great understated sense of humour which is often reflected in their art.

What are your plans for 2014?

I am now selling my products in 3 stores in the UK. I would like to double that by the end of this year. I’m also waiting to hear back from a major retailer in the next few weeks – fingers crossed!
