Apparently I’ve always been interested, well interested in drawing at least. I was a mothers dream as I would sit and draw colour for ages. My mum of course takes all the credit, as she was very strict about colouring outside of the lines!
How would you describe your design style?
Free. I used to get so caught up in realistic illustrations when I was younger and spent most of my artist journey illustrating famous people’s portraits, that when I started in children’s publishing I found it hard to draw simple characters, I would be lost in the detail. My illustration style now has really developed from my inability to draw storybook characters! Shh!
What is your favourite piece in your collection?
Whatever I’m currently working on. It instantly becomes my favourite. I have just finished a piece, Christmas in the Woods and I love it! …I actually can’t stop looking at it!
Is there any artistic talent in your family?
My mum and dad are both good at drawing, my dad is a great copy artist and my mum goes to an art class when she can. My daughter is pretty goo d too !
What is the journey you take to produce your work?
I wish this was more exciting but I think of something a scene or a character note in down and sketch it out when the kids are in bed. It can be seasonal, or a situation. It takes a few rough sketches before I add ink. I currently colour in on the computer but hopefully Santa is bringing me some lovely coloured pens so I’m very excited about that. I’m starting to miss the fine detail I can’t get on the computer. Slipping into old habits!
What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?
I’ve just moved back from two years in Sydney and I missed the UK so much, especially London. So an opportunity to have my work along side the lovely British folk is an honour and we’re totally cooler than anywhere else. Apart from any outsiders buying my work …of course!
When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?
Sleeping! …I have a 7 month old and a, 4 year old zzz!
Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?
Lovely London!
What makes British talent different than elsewhere?
You never know what to expect!
What are your plans for 2014?
Lots more drawing!
