When did you first become interested in art?
I can’t ever remember not being interested in art. From a young age I’ve always been drawing and painting and just never stopped.
At secondary school I was actually really bad and would only come into school for Art and then barely went to my other classes.
How would you describe your design style?
Evolving – I think I am just discovering my own style and handwriting. I lean towards watercolours and hand painted elements.
MAYBELLE by DizzyWonders
What inspires you?
I love vintage patterns and florals , but I also get drawn to more abstract bold and colourful paintings. I’m also really inspired my my home town Glasgow and Scotland – there is just so much to take from there. One minute your in an urban city, but then in an hour you can be in the most beautiful country side.
What is your favourite piece in your collection?
Belle – this started from me working on new painted patterns, like Maybelle, but instead of drawing and planning I just went free hand. I often worry my hand painting isn’t at the level I want, but this turned out so beautiful that I surprised myself. I also think this is a style that works well for me and I really enjoyed working on.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?
We aren’t a massively creative family, but my dad was always good at drawing and my big sister dabbles in lots of different creative projects – most recently photography which she is really good at. She in fact takes shots of textures and inspiration for me to use in prin ts.
What is the journey you take to produce your work?
I get inspiration filtering in from all sources, maybe a brief I have been working on, an image I have seen or even from talking with friends. I work quite fast, when an idea takes I have to work on it as soon as I can. I’m very easily distracted, so I will love an idea and then the next minute be taken in by something else.
If I’m painting I will literally sit and do lots of different options, play with colours and then piece it all together on the computer. Though I do try to limit the amount of digital manipulation on prints which have some from paintings – as I think seeing that they are done by hand is important and adds a little charm.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?
I think the idea of supporting British Artists is great and it’s a really great accessible platform to sell from. Especially for myself as I work full time so Art Rookie makes my life a lot easier.
When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?
I love reading! It’s very rare I’m not reading a book. I’m also bit of a film geek, so I’m often at the cinema or reading up on my favourite films.
Also hinted in a couple of my designs your also very likely to find me napping.
Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?
I have been quite lucky I think with what I have done so far. However, as this is a spare time practise for me, I don’t have as much time to dedicate to promoting myself as I would like. It would be great to see my work in magazine or in stores one day. In the future the aim would be to do more special collaborations with brands but I have a bit of a way to go until then in terms of confidence in my abilities and nailing down my own style.
Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?
In a lovely leafy pub with friends, Glasgow, or in my house in London – I was so lucky to find an amazing room in a lovely shared house. We have a roll top tub is perfect to relax and a roof terrace for sunny summer days. I love it!

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?
I love the humour steeped in British talent and artwork.
I also think we are very proud of our culture and history and the vast range of inspiration at hand. For me personally I was lucky enough to grow up in Glasgow which I think is a very creative friendly city – art & music is such a massive part of the culture. It’s a place full of character (and characters). I met so many amazing people along the way and also got to see a really humble side of the British Artist community.
What are your plans for 2016?
I actually have a little project in mind, it’s funny and bit cheeky, inspired by Scottish Mothers. It’s more of a personal project but I hope others will enjoy it and relate.
I’d also really just love to dedicate more time to working on new prints, practising my painting and really work on developing my signature style.
