When did you first become interested in art?
When I was a little girl around the age of 6. I used to be obsessed with The Rugrats and had all the videos going! I drew every single video cover!
How would you describe your design style?
My art is very quirky! It’s very me…. I’m trying to create something current, yet unique.
What inspires you?
Disney and Pixar animated movies, the animated tv series Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends, the places and people around me and my recent visit at DreamWorks Animation Studios, LA.
What is your favourite piece in your collection?
My favourite piece has to be my concept of mine and my girlfriend Jenny’s first date at a coffee shop. It portrays that quirky nature about my work, I think.
Is there any artistic talent in your family?
Noooooo! My Dad tried to draw me and I looked like a poodle!! ….. Erm, apparently a relative of my Dad’s used to paint scenery and backgrounds for films and plays. My great grandad also paints by numbers…… haha. Oh, and my little sister is taking after me and is very good at art.
What is the journey you take to produce your work?
Well first I like to think of a situation or story that preferably means something to me, then I start to brainstorm what pictures would look good in a series to illustrate it. Then I roughly sketch out my ideas on my wacom cintiq and tighten up the designs later on.
What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?
It’s just something different I suppose. My work isn’t created specifically to be on products. It’s concept art which tells a story, but I was curious as to how it would look on say, a cushion or a clock! It’s also great exposure.
When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?
Drawing is mostly what I do all day! However, I play guitar and trumpet and am an avid gym goer haha!
Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?
Yes as the industry I’m trying to get into is so competitive! It’s very hard to find a job, even with a degree and everywhere wants experience, but how can you have experience when nowhere will give you any in the first place?!
Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?
In my room in the dark with my blinds closed drawing on my cintiq! ….. or in town shopping after the gym!
What makes British talent different than elsewhere?
I feel the art we produce is influenced by what’s around us, and the UK is so steeped with history, unlike that of America, which adds a bit more personality and uniqueness into our work.
What are your plans for 2016?
I’ve been applying left right and centre for jobs in animation studios! I’m going to keep going until I get my foot in the door. I know I can do it, I just need to be in the right place at the right time. I’m determined!
