Featured Artist: The Taste Buds

The Taste Buds by Sai, is a series of comical happenings between food and
their friends…including plenty of puns!

When did you first become interested in art?

I was fascinated by art programmes on television as a child, especially
ones that Tony Hart presented. But it was my love for animation and
comics that led me to develop a cartoon-style, and to
anthropomorphise everything.

How would you describe your design style?

Quirky, cute and comical.

What inspires you?

Food. No surprises there. I watch too many cookery shows.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

In the Art Rookie collection at the moment, it would have to be ‘So
Jammy’. It makes me giggle. I have more favourites that I’ll be adding
to Art Rookie very soon.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

Pretty much all of my family are creative in some way. In terms of
visual art though, I’d have to say my mum and gran were great role
models for me growing up.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I’m keen on showcasing as many different foods from various cultures.
It’s usually a matter of thinking up a food that I’d either like to draw, or
tell people about, and what pun could go with it. However, it can be a
bit chicken-and-egg at times, with the pun coming first!

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

Art Rookie showcases British art, and having been born and brought
up in Britain, I wanted to be a part of it. There are so many unique
styles on Art Rookie, and there weren’t any discriminatory rules about
joining…which made it feel like such a comfortable, friendly community.
Like a big, warm hug.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Cooking…and eating! (And watching cartoons and cookery
programmes, for research purposes of course).

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

This is a relatively new venture for me. Art, food and humour are all
very subjective… and I’ve made it difficult for myself by combining all
three. Finding the ideal places to get my work out there is what I’m
trying to figure out right now.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

Probably doodling in a café whilst eating vegan cupcakes!

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

There’s so much talent around the world, but Brits are the best. British
artists seem so fearless, producing all sorts of art so that there is a little
something for everyone. I love that! Hopefully my work fits in there
somewhere too.

What are your plans for 2016?

Just to continue making people smile.
