When did you first become interested in art?

I’ve always loved drawing. I became more interested in art during GSCE and A Level but I really found my passion within illustration and collage art in Uni. It’s a dream to make a career out of it!

How would you describe your design style?

Definitely surreal. Surrealism has become my passion, its the whole idea of life remixed.

What inspires you?

Most of the time quotes inspire me and I play on that, in particular things to with psychology, memory formation and perceptions of the mind. Ever since I went to a seminar where Graham Rawle was speaking about vintage magazines such as ‘good housekeeping’ I became fascinated with these; the style, the typography, the makeup, there was just something so captivating. Since that I’ve been scavenging through family members photo albums dating back to the 50’s and I’ve gotten a lot of material and ideas from these.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

At the minute my favourite piece is ‘Falling in love.’

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

My mum is very creative, she is great at textiles.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I have found the most important thing for me is to research and collect materials, whether it be magazines, newspapers, photos or found objects. At the minute I’m working on emotions and I like to begin by researching and writing down words, phrases, ideas. I then scan images and objects into my computer and create imagery using a mixture of photoshop and illustrator in order to create my final image. I find I’m at my most productive at night for some reason.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

It’s a great platform because it enables us designers to simply focus on designing and not worry about printing, manufacturing, postage etc which is a huge weight off especially when you are just starting out and everything seems so daunting!

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Probably being far too honest here, but binge watching Netflix and cooking!

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

I don’t feel like I have put myself out there enough. Honestly I think it has been a combination of doubt and not having a sense of direction or clear purpose which led to me feeling rather demotivated. One thing I have learned in this past year is that there will always be excuses as to why you ‘can’t’ get work done but you need to find a way to rise above all that to stop blocking your creativity with negative thinking. I feel like now I am highly motivated and I hope to be a lot more successful in the coming year with getting noticed, challenging myself and working on collections.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

I currently live in Northern Ireland, although I have friends from Uni dotted around the UK so we travel back and fourth to catch up.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

I feel like it’s a little more quirky and playful and I love that diversity that brings.

What are your plans for 2016?

I aim to produce lots more work, build an audience and challenge myself.

When did you first become interested in art?

I grew up in a creative environment, it has always been a part of my life. My Mum has always been into art and I now share her passion.

How would you describe your design style?

That’s a hard one… I’d say its modern, colourful and quirky with a hippy feel!

What inspires you?

I love bright colours, I rarely create a design that is black and white. Animals and nature, I also enjoy creating designs for friends and family… from cup cakes to lion’s!

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My crazy cactus pattern that I created for my best friends birthday, we both have slight obsession with cacti! I had the design printed on a ‘Art Rookie’ cup and saucer it looked so cute!

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

Yes my Mum, I think she must of have tried every craft going! From clothes making, creating dolls, knitting, painting you name it! She now loves photoshop too!

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I start with an idea and sketch away some doodles, once I am happy with a final design it will be transformed digitally using illustrator and photoshop.
As I love painting colourful abstracts, I will often use these in elements of my designs. I generally love experimenting and having fun with my art.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

I spotted an Art Rookie product featured in Stylist Magazine and was so excited when I looked up the website. I have felt for a long time that the UK was missing a platform for emerging artists so when I saw Art Rookie I knew I wanted to be involved! It’s a fantastic way to see your work come to life and its so easy to do!

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

I love baking cakes, so I’m very happy the ‘Great British Bake Off’ is back! Going for long country walks with my husband James and our crazy dog Mitz, visiting art exhibitions and meeting up with friends for some good food, giggles and a cocktail.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

I have only started to promote my work this year, so I feel I’m still quite new. I think Instagram is fantastic place to start, it’s so helpful to see what people like and to communicate with fellow artists. However I feel it does take time and dedication to get your work seen, that’s why Art Rookie is so great. I can see Art Rookie becoming a good community base for artists.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

Usually at my home in Kent, in the garden with a sketch book and a cup of tea! Or in London at an art gallery or trying out a new restaurant in Soho.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

Our British humour, and the way we experiment with new styles. It’s alway fresh and exciting. Brits are not shy!

What are your plans for 2016?

To keep having fun with my art,  my next idea is to create jewellery with my designs! I hope to have a website up and running too.

When did you first become interested in art?

All my life I liked drawing, I wasn’t actually ever good at it until I left school.

How would you describe your design style?

I would say it has a screen print look with a dash of 1950s ads and a twist of satire.

What inspires you?

News, everyday life, tv, politics.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

The most successful piece is my ‘give your ego some likes’ piece, but my own personal favourite is difficult to choose, it would be like choosing your favourite son or daughter.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

Yes, all but my father. I married an artist/teacher and our children are very good at art, much better than I was at their age.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

Lots of thinking, sketching and working out colours, and that’s before I start the art.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

I wanted an out let in the uk. Some of my work is really only for a UK audience and the humour I have in them would be lost on any other nationality. ie the custard creams illustration.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

I go to a Taekwondo class twice a week and my family keep me busy.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

Oh god yes. I’ve been freelance since 1996 and worked in many styles. I developed my current style in 2009 and it has only really got noticed 3 years ago.Up until then it was a struggle, but I put the hard work in and took the criticism and knock backs.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

I don’t hang out anywhere. I don’t come to London much nowadays and I have never done an exhibition. I just spend my time at home with my family in Yorkshire.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

I think there is brilliant talent all over the world but British talent is special. I think it be our eccentric way of thinking or our urge to create.

What are your plans for 2016?

I don’t really plan anything, but I would like to get my work published.

When did you first become interested in art?

I have been interested in art as long as I can remember, my mum says I always had a pen in my hand. In the sixties I filled a sketch book as thick as a telephone directory with drawings of the Space Race and Moon landings, so my Art goes back a long way.

How would you describe your design style?

I describe my current work as influenced by the classic pre and post war travel posters. Techniques have moved on since then, I work on the computer so I hope this gives my work a more contemporary edge whilst still paying homage to some of my favourite poster artists, Tom Purvis, Frank Mason and Norman Wilkinson to name a few.

What inspires you?

My main inspirations are the countryside and architecture, Tudor Halls to concrete Brutalism, so quite a wide choice. I have always been very interested in architecture and love getting to know the buildings I illustrate. When I work on a more rural work I always aim to capture the feel and mood of a place, as in my depictions of the Isle of Jura, one of my favourite places on the planet.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My favourite piece at the moment is Loch an t-Siob, a lake at the foot of the famous Paps of Jura. It takes a couple of hours to walk to the Loch and then you have the climb to the summit of a Pap, Beinn an Oir being my favourite at 2,477 feet. I hope I have captured the sheer remoteness and tranquillity of the place as well as the majesty of the Paps.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

Yes, when I was a child my mother painted landscapes in oils as a hobby, these were hung around the house and must have been an early influence on me. My mother probably got her interest from her father, being a miner he didn’t have much spare time but when I was young he was always drawing Chad (Wot, no bread) for me and a very clever optical puzzle which took me years to work out.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I do a lot of research, especially for my more architectural work, I spend time collecting photos, plans and of course the internet is invaluable. I was recently commissioned to work on the Barbican, which is huge, Google Earth was fantastic for studying the angles and layout. I like to capture dramatic view points, as in my architectural prints commissioned by Dorothy, a Design house in Manchester. I loved working on this series as I learnt so much about the subject matter, for example, Eel Pie Island Hotel, the old Blues Club on the Thames, it was a real education.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

Art Rookie is such a fantastic platform for emerging Artists. For some time I have been struggling with how do I get my work to market and concentrate on producing the work at the same time. Art Rookie takes a lot of this pressure away and it’s great to see my work on products I had never considered before, for example, Phone Cases.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Walking, I am fortunate to live near the Lake District, the Peak District and the Cheshire plain, so there is ample opportunity for all types of scenery. Walking on the Isle of Jura is a real treat, it is so remote with no footpaths, you can walk for hours and never see anyone. Cycling is another enjoyment, I have always cycled, it was a great way of exploring as a kid and last year I cycled to Yorkshire to see the Tour de France, what an experience.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

I think all Artists find getting noticed a struggle, especially early on, I have only been pursuing freelance illustration for two years and have been fortunate to get a couple of lucky breaks. One was an unpaid commission for a poster included in a definitive series of books on the history of the Railway Poster, this lead on to paid commissions for actual railway posters.

The internet has definitely made it easier to communicate your work and finding Art Rookie is a real boon.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

The Isle of Jura most years, my wife’s family has a croft there which has been in the family for hundreds of years, it’s a real bolt hole. We also visit the Lakes on a regular basis, I haven’t made it to the top of Helvellyn yet, it’s on the list. I love visiting London, stick me in any Museum, Library or Park in the Capital and I’m in heaven. Failing that, you can find me in a good boozer in or around Manchester.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

We are a real mixture of people, experiences and regions, it all makes for a great recipe for off the wall creativity. There is also a lot of wry humour in these islands and this often is reflected in Art. I also like the fact that there is room for comment on the human experience and the world today, British Artist have a real knack of getting you to look at these things from a different stance. One of my all time favourite Art pieces is “Ghost” by Rachel Whiteread, the inside of a north London house cast in concrete, “mummifying the air in a room”, standing next to it sent shivers up my spine, I felt like a Ghost looking in.

What are your plans for 2016?

I am just coming to the end of some really interesting commissions, it’s been a busy couple of years and I’m really ready for our family holiday in Italy. My immediate plans after this is to work on expanding my collection of landscapes to include all corners of Britain and to continue with my “Lost Destination” prints for Dorothy, we have some interesting ideas coming up.

When did you first become interested in art?

I’ve always been interested in art and doing creative things from a young age, when I was about 8 I had a teacher at primary school who was really encouraging and I drew him a picture of a crow that he loved,  he said he thought id go to art school- he was right.

How would you describe your design style?

Fun, colourful, cool!

What inspires you?

Animals, any animals I love drawing them! I love to look at other illustrators and artists to see what they’re up to but like to try and do my own thing rather than replicate others.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

I love the sausage dog and both giraffes!

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

My mum is very talented at crafts and makes beautiful stained glass and amazing cross stitch. My brother is also very artistic and does amazing wood cut pictures.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I just get an idea in my head and start drawing. Line drawings first then colour second- depending on how the drawing turns out then I’ll see where it will go.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

It’s a cool platform for British designers to get noticed.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Walking my amazing hound dog, running, I’m also a veterinary nurse so still work a couple of days a week saving animals.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

Social media is awesome for getting your work out there but it can be a struggle to be seen  in general on the Internet as there’s so many awesome artists out there, it’s hard to be constantly trying to do something new to keep interest.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

I live in Stroud in Gloucestershire so you’d find me in my studio in an old cowshed on an amazing farm hanging out with all the new piglets and my dog.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

There’s so much fresh talent with people doing really cool things!

What are your plans for 2015?

To keep on drawing and hopefully making things people are interested in!

When did you first become interested in art?

The artist at home has always been my father, so I can say that somehow my interest in art was stimulated by him. Over the years then, attending art schools in Italy, I had the opportunity to increase my culture and this helped me a lot in the realisation of my works.

How would you describe your design style?

Pop Surrealism.

What inspires you?

I always find the inspiration in the trips I make. Traveling opens up your mind and makes you able to learn about other cultures, to see new landscapes, it is always something extremely stimulating.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

I love equally all of my arts and I couldn’t sincerely choose.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

My father is a painter and an archeologist.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

I produce my work especially at night but I have my inspirations in the day. I never leave my place without my camera and I take portraits moving around my town. This is the way I populate my arts.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

Being part of a community of artists like Art Rookie is, for me, a great opportunity to make my work visible. This community appealed to me with an innovative vision of art, something that matches mine, thus I am very happy to become a part of it.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

I like to travel, as soon as I can I take the plane to unknown destinations. Besides this, I love visiting museums, wandering around markets, going to the theatre, having a glass of wine with friends, sharing the everyday life with my partner.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

Yes, make a living with art has always been a very difficult thing, but the trick is not to get discouraged, never give up and hard work.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

Newry, a small town in Northern Ireland where my family lives, and London, a city I deeply love.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

Their peculiar style which is a lucky mash up within classic elegance and eccentricity.

What are your plans for 2014?

I’d like to finally open my own studio.

When did you first become interested in art?

I still have some early drawings of mine from about age 3. Circa 1986. As a big fan of pop culture growing up, I was always creating my own comics for my mum to read.As soon as I had the relevant dexterity…I picked up a pencil.

How would you describe your design style?

In terms of where I am right now, pop art is an obvious influence, Roy Lichtenstein has always been a personal favourite of mine. Right now I’m really having fun bringing my favourite film and tv characters to life in my own unique style. I’ve dipped my toes into so many different areas of art and design that my style is always changing. Which I like. Keeps it interesting.

What inspires you?

Film soundtracks are highly inspirational to me, especially whilst working on art. Great cinematic movie scenes inspire me. Family, adversity, courage under fire, artrookie, Standing in a kebab shop or even on top of a mountain. I’m inspired all the time. Thats just my nature I think.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

I really enjoyed doing the ‘Interstellar’ print recently. Big fan of the film. Having said that, I have some upcoming characters that could be potential favourites in the future.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

My older brother is an award winning creative at J. Walter Thompson, one of the worlds leading advertising agencies. He is a great source for information and guidance and I owe a lot of my sensibilities to him. My great aunt is also a fantastic artist. My Dad had a painting put up in his local library. He told me to say that. I wouldn’t go as far as to say my Mum has artistic talent, you should have seen some of the wallpaper we had in the ’90’s. But she has always nurtured my art and been very supportive. My sister makes a mean roast dinner. That’s artistic, right?

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

Normally starts out with me going through my dvd collection and picking out films and characters. I also read plenty of film related magazines and websites and thats a good source for keeping ideas fresh. If I see an image I like I’ll cut it out and scan it onto my mac for inspiration. From there I do a lot of my work digitally with a stylus and pad. Oh and headphones and music. Seems to help.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

I had been looking for a good art company to help me get my work to a larger audience. One day I just happened upon an artrookie post on instagram. When I did my research I was very happy and signed up straight away. They have been nothing but courteous to me, would highly recommend them to other aspiring artists. PS – I wasn’t paid for that last comment. Not even a fiver.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

Love going to the cinema to see a new film, so I’m there quite a lot. You know, Popcorn, Hot dogs, Giant pepsi. Good times. Used to go to a lot of music gigs around London when I started out taking photos for local bands, and still try to now if it’s a good band I like. Listen to a lot of Howard Stern every day, enjoy reading and a nice cup of tea/coffee. But mostly, when I’m not creating masterpieces I’m creating masterpieces.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

Short answer, Yes. But to be honest, I think I was being lazy. One thing I have learned is…You can always do more.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

Most likely at a NISA local getting a large slush puppie. Other than that, I work from home quite a lot. I like going to bars but anything too mental and I’m out of there like a virgin on prom night. You’d never see me in PACHA for example. Too noisy. Gaucho Steak house. Perfect.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

We never give up. We have a good sense of humour and a tremendous passion for art and design.

What are your plans for 2015?
Mostly to build an audience for my work, and stay true to why I started this in the first place. I should probably also think about finding a good woman. Thats a good plan for 2015.

Danny

Featured Artist: Charlotte Jade

When did you first become interested in art?

I was always drawing when I was younger, I loved drawing cartoon animals and our fridge was covered with them! It was secondary school where I developed a real passion for drawing, particularly when I got to my GCSE’s and I would spend hours studying the intricate details in faces, animals and plants. From then on out I knew art and drawing was going to be a major part of my life. I then attended Camberwell College of Arts for university, and it was there that I became very interested in print design, and taught myself how to create the patterns you see in my work today.

How would you describe your design style?

I would describe my style as realistic and detailed. I primarily focus on creating pencil drawings, though I do also enjoy painting. I love creating patterns for fabrics and wallpapers, but portraiture is also a passion of mine.

What inspires you?

I’m predominantly inspired by the beauty in nature; plants, foliage, flowers, animals… the wealth of variety in the natural world is endless and ever changing. I have also just recently returned from travelling around South East Asia, where I gained a lot of inspiration for my patterns from the bright and vibrant culture I experienced. Another fascination of mine is people and their expressions of everyday life; if I see an interesting face, I have to draw it. Fashion is another inspiration to me, I love keeping up to date with styles from the runway and current fashion trends.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

I have an obsession with Pandas, so I would have to say the Panda, panda, Panda pattern! But I also really love the feather pattern, it formed a part of my final project at university so it’s a sentimental piece of great importance to me.

Is there any artistic talent in your family?

Yes, my mum makes beautiful wedding dresses, my dad is a carpenter, my sister is a buyer for Topshop and my brother a musician! So yeah, I think we are all quite artistic.

What is the journey you take to produce your work?

When I have been inspired to create a pattern, I begin by studying the subject that has inspired me; be it a leaf shape, flowers, the detail in an animal’s coat… I then map out the idea for the pattern and begin to hand draw its structure. From there I scan the drawing to my computer and edit it digitally, playing around with colours and so on, before finally making it a repeating pattern.

What made you want to be a part of Art Rookie?

Art Rookie is such a fantastic platform for young designers. It’s like an online exhibition of unique and striking art work. The site is really supportive in promoting designers and getting their work out there for the world to see. If it wasn’t for Art Rookie there would be an entire world of beautiful art work people might otherwise never be able to find.

When you’re not creating masterpieces what do you enjoy doing?

I love running and keeping fit, and I’m actually currently training for this years London Marathon (running for the Bone Cancer Research Trust) I also have a keen interest in live music and socialising with my friends.

Have you faced any struggles getting your work noticed?

I began promoting my work as the Charlotte Jade brand in January of this year, so I’m only just starting out but I have noticed how important it is to try and make your work stand out and be recognised given there are so many talented illustrators and designers out there right now. Social media platforms are a great help, such as Instagram, Twitter & Facebook as they give young designers a chance to build a following and get their work noticed. Social media, along with the support of Art Rookie has really helped me these past few months.

Where would we find you hanging out in the UK?

I’m based in North London, but I have friends and family dotted around the country so I’m always travelling around visiting people.

What makes British talent different than elsewhere?

British talent is unique, original and bold enough to push to limits. There is such variation in British talent which makes it so interesting.

What are your plans for 2014?

I launched by business in January and have seen a lot of success so far, so I plan on continuing my efforts to ensure further growth and development, as well as hoping to increase and broaden my client base as the year goes on. I’ll continue to build on my portfolio, experiment with new styles and techniques and create more patterns with the view of turning these into wallpaper.
